Wright City's Pfuhl commits to Central Methodist

Wright City quarterback Andrew Pfuhl has committed to play football at Central Methodist University, an NAIA program in Fayette, Mo., next season.

Pfuhl threw for 2,617 yards and 24 touchdowns in the fall while leading the Wildcats to a pair of Class 3 playoff wins.

Pfuhl described himself as a pass-first quarterback, and expects to continue that style in college.

“But I can run if I need to,” he said. “Central (Methodist) runs an offense I am familiar with, so I think it is a pretty good fit for me.”

Central Methodist finished 3-11 last season while competing in the Heart of America Conference.

The Eagles featured a pass-heavy offense in 2015, putting the ball in the air 35 times per game.

“His game translates really well to CMU because he throws a great deep ball,” Wright City Head Coach Jeff Sargent said. “His intermediate passes are the things he needs to work on, but when he’s throwing it to the outside and deep, it works really well. If he was 6-foot-3 we would be talking about him going to a much bigger school.”

Pfuhl said he isn’t sure how early in his career he will see the field, but he hopes to make an impact next season.

“I’m ready to see the difference between high school and college,” he said. “I like where I’m going and I think I can make it work with the way I play and the way they’ve played in the past.”

Pfuhl narrowed his college choice down to three schools, and chose Central Methodist over Rockford (Ill.) University and Lindenwood University-Belleville.

As he mulled over his options, all signs began pointing to Fayette.

“All the little things started making my decision a lot easier,” he said. “The style of play, the history of the program, things like that.”

Pfuhl said he wants to improve on the mental aspects of the quarterback position, like making better reads, before now and next season.

“I want to add more power to my throws and improve on my touch, as well,” he added.

Sargent said Pfuhl will be tough to replace at Wright City.

“We were picked to finish seventh in the conference, and the next thing you know, we’re third,” he said. “And Andrew had a lot to do with that. I’m happy for him because I know it was a long process and a very difficult decision for him. I just wish we had more players like him.”
