Wright City's Morgan Nute among leaders at end of day one of Class 2 tourney

Wright City senior golfer Morgan Nute said she wanted to have fun during her final rounds at the MSHSAA state golf tournament.

Playing in the Class 2 tournament at the Bogey Creek Golf Club in Farmington on Monday, Nute ended her opening round by shooting a three-under-par 69 to share the lead headed into the second and final day with Lutheran St. Charles’ Emma Kombrink and Maplewood-Richmond Heights’ Sara Kolar.

“I feel good, it went well today,” said Nute in the wake of her round.

During the opening day, Nute carded five birdies, two bogeys and 11 pars.

Her best stretch of play may well have been holes No. 10 and 16, where she carded four birdies and a pair of pars.

On the 125-yard No. 16, she sank her birdie putt to score a two on the hole.

Now, Nute, who has finished in the top four in each of her three previous state tournaments, will take aim at the state’s top prize tomorrow when she tees off on hole No. 1 at 10:27 a.m. with her co-leaders and Eldon’s Haven Evers, who sits second at plus-2.

“I’m looking forward to tomorrow,” Nute said. “I’m just going to try and repeat today and have fun.”
