If you blinked on Thursday, you likely missed it.
Wright City senior Kali Jensen opened her Senior Night, and pretty much the entire event, by pinning South Callaway’s Michaela Smith in 20 seconds in their super-short match at 125 pounds.
While an admirable feat, as Wildcats coach Fred Ross said, Jensen was ‘hyped’ to start things off; Jensen herself said she wished she could have savored the moment a bit more.
“Part of me feels like I should have done it slower just to get some more mat time, but I'm happy either way,” Jensen said. “This feels great to share with my teammates, both on the (boys and girls teams). I’ve watched them grow, some of them from the very beginning, and it's just nice seeing us (celebrate).”
Jensen wasn’t the only Wildcat wrestler to perform well Thursday during the tri-meet on the girls' side with South Callaway and Winfield.
Victoria Riggs won by fall over Winfield’s Regina Daniel at 110 pounds. Liliana Wiedemeier won by fall at 140. Sadie Sehnert won by fall over Winfield’s Jozee Kerkemeyer at 145, and Joshlyn Hawn defeated Winfield’s Dezirae Shirley 7-6.
“This team is really tight-knit, like a family,” Jensen said. “So, yeah, this is really nice to see everyone out here competing.”
On the boys' side, the Wildcats also had a strong showing against Missouri Military Academy, South Callaway, and Winfield.
At 120, James Guinn beat Missouri Military’s Lucas Dias by fall. At 132, Joe Beitel won by fall in 46 seconds over Winfield’s Jacob Edwards, at 144. Ty Jarmuszkiewcz defeated Winfield’s Carson Hinkle at 1:32 and South Callaway’s Nick Doster 13-1. At 165, Caleb Murray defeated Winfield’s Trey Lawson at 1:31.
At 190, Bentley Teubner defeated Winfield’s Isaac Johnson by fall at 4:28. At 215, Quincy Rice beat MMA’s William Creighton 15-0 and South Callaway’s Elijah Nutter by fall at 30 seconds.
Finally, at 285, Errol Moore defeated MMA’s Ulis Gordon by fall and Ayden Dile did the same against MMA’s Josiah Emminger.
“As a coach, this is one of the special nights,” Ross said. “It stays special every year. I’ve been at this for a long time and it’s still special. I’ve seen a lot of these kids go through the program for four years and now they’re getting ready to graduate. This is very special.”
