The Wright City football team picked up right where it left off on Friday with a 48-18 home thrashing of Van-Far.

The Wildcats won the team’s third straight after dropping the first four this season.

Touchdowns came through the air and on the ground as the hosts beat the team’s Eastern Missouri brethren for the 10th time in 11 games.

Wright City (3-4) opened the scoring on a tough first-quarter run by junior quarterback Kayden McCurdy, and the team led 7-0 after the extra point from sophomore Sam Sherman.

The lead doubled when McCurdy found senior wide receiver TJ Hamel for a score to make it 14-0 after Sherman’s PAT.

Two more scores just before the half increased the lead to 28-0.

First, senior running back Benji Rodriguez found the end zone on a 15-yard run just more than halfway through the second quarter.

And then, McCurdy found junior wideout Kaveon Schulte for a score with 4.7 seconds left in the half to send the teams to the locker rooms with Wright City up 28-0.

After Van-Far (1-6) scored on a long run to open the second half, Wright City struck again.

Rodriguez scored on a 34-yard run to make it 34-6 and, after another score by the Indians, Wright City scored twice, with another Rodriguez run – his third of the game – making the score 48-12 before a final score from Van-Far.

Coming up, Wright City heads on the road to take on Montgomery County at 7 p.m. next Friday.

Last season’s 26-20 overtime loss to the Wildcats was the ninth straight by Wright City.
