Wright City West Elementary hosted two events in conjunction with the Relay For Life of Warren County in order to raise $1,648 for the American Cancer Society.“Unfortunately, we have all been impacted by cancer,” said Dr. Shawn Riley, Wright City West Elementary principal. “Our students know that sadness as well. During our annual Relay Recess event, our students dug deep to show how important it is to support people with cancer.” Dr. Riley said there were students who donated their allowance, did extra chores, or asked family members to donate.“I donated to Relay for Recess to help those who have cancer,” said Trey Brakensiek, a fourth-grade student in Mrs. Beckmeyer’s class, who raised the most of all the classes in the school with a total of $202.17.“At West, I am proud of the education we provide to students each day,” said Dr. Riley. “But more importantly, I love that we are able to develop a sense of giving, sacrifice, and thinking of others first. That is the real joy I get from this job.”Wright City West Elementary hosted its second annual Relay Recess on April 17. Last year it raised around $1,000 through a coin drive and selling T-shirts. This year the school increased that total by $300, plus it added a second event, a Relay Recess Fun Run/Walk, the following weekend on April 25, where an additional $300 was raised.“We decided to do the Relay Recess Run to bring the school and the community together to fight cancer, and to let families know they are not alone,” said Tina Kolarik, Wright City West Elementary assistant principal. “We also used it as a way to say thank you to all the students for donating their change to the American Cancer Society.”Members of the community pitched in to help as well, including Economy Supermarket of Wright City who donated fruit and the Warren County Health Department who donated water. Jackie Niermann, Aimee Newcomb and Kim Schierding also assisted with the run.“I believe that Relay Recess is a very important event to let students know the importance of giving back,” said Melinda Juergensmeyer, Wright City West Elementary school nurse. Juergensmeyer has helped organize the Relay Recess event the past two years.“When I was asking each grade level if they knew of someone who had cancer, almost every student raised their hand,” she said. “The students were very excited to be a small part of helping others — I’m so proud of our school.”The funds from the Relay Recess and run/walk event were credited to the Relay For Life of Warren County, which will take place from 1 p.m.-1 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at Black Hawk Middle School in Warrenton. For more information, visit relayforlife.org/warrencomo or contact Kanna Rook, American Cancer Society staff partner, at 636-866-4884 or kanna.rook@cancer.org.
