After an exciting three-set match last month, the Warrenton and Wright City volleyball teams could meet again next week in the Class 3, District 7 championship.
But it won’t be easy.
No. 5 seed Warrenton will play No. 4 Winfield Monday at 5 p.m. at Lutheran St. Charles, with the winner facing top-seeded Lutheran St. Charles Tuesday at the same time.
“I think that my girls are definitely ready for districts,” Warrenton Head Coach Kristen McDowell said. “We need to make some adjustments for the teams that we could possibly see, but they’ve had a couple really difficult games to get them ready for next week and I’m looking forward to seeing how they perform.”
The Warriors will get a possible tune-up for districts when they host O’Fallon Christian Thursday at 6 p.m.
Warrenton has used a balanced attack most of the season.
Allison May leads the team with 26 aces, but three others — Jacklyn Dickey, Amber Glazebrook and Sabrina McRoberts — have at least 12 aces each.
McRoberts leads the team with 82 kills, while Ashtyn Dixon has a team-high 106 assists.
“This season this group of girls has exceeded my expectations,” McDowell said. “They have improved in every match and really come together to play as a team.”
Warrenton split its two regular season matches with Winfield, as each team swept its opponent on the road.
“I’m excited for a third match against Winfield, but, more importantly I think the girls are excited to play them again,” McDowell said. “I think the girls have learned that they have improved throughout this season and they are capable at playing at a higher level.”
McDowell doesn’t have any concrete goals for the district tournament, but hopes each player plays up to her potential.
“I want them to know that no matter what, they put everything on the court and did the best they could,” she said. “I know we have the potential to do well at districts, as long as they play together.”
If the Warriors can win two games, they could see Wright City in the championship match Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
The No. 6 seed Wildcats face No. 3 O’Fallon Christian Monday at 7:30 p.m., and would face No. 2 St. Francis Borgia or No. 7 St. Charles West in the semifinals.
Wright City opened its season with a two-set loss to O’Fallon Christian.
“I think we will be prepared for what they have, but my girls need to fight hard to beat them,” Wright City Head Coach Amy Geurin said. “The season has gone pretty well so far, but I think we are on an uphill swing going into districts.”
Geurin complimented the play of Amy Janowski and DeAsha Briner heading into the postseason.
The duo has combined for 51 aces and 137 kills this year.
“They have really stood out as great players and positive leaders,” Geurin said, adding her team’s only goal is to get past O’Fallon Christian and go from there.
“Our goal as a team is to win the first game in districts, so the girls are working really hard to achieve that,” she said.
