The Wright City track team is hoping to return to action Friday at the annual St. Dominic Crusader Invitational, and Coach Fred Ross is excited to see what the Wildcats can do.
“We don’t have a ton of depth, but we have some really good individuals, and I think our relays will become pretty good,” he said.
The boys 400-, 800- and 3,200-meter relays are expected to have big seasons, as well as a handful of sprinters.
“We’re really pleased with the relays, and Jayden (Mahaney) has done well in the sprints, too,” Ross said.
Mahaney won the 100 at last month’s Wildcat Warmup (12.14).
The 400 (Mahaney, Jeremy Cundiff, John Pezold and Ricky McDonald) and 800 (Brandon Culton, Richard Villinga, George Pezold and John Simon) teams won their respective races.
In the field events, sophomore Shane Vehige also impressed Ross.
“Shane did a really nice job at our meet,” Ross said. “He set his P.R. and did really well in the javelin in his first meet.”
The Wildcats expect to get thrower Joe Phillips back Friday at St. Dominic after he missed the Warmup meet due to a lack of practices.
Phillips expects to lead the group of Wildcat throwers, who will be without Donnie Grueneberg, this spring. “We’re just a little short numbers-wise when it comes to our boys throwers,” Ross said. “But he’ll be back Friday, and we’re looking for some good things from him.”
Ross added, “We’ll see some bigger schools there, which is always nice. It’s always good to see different schools to give us an idea of where we’re at.”
