The girls wrestling season kicked off Saturday with the Wright City Wildcats Tournament, as host Wright City and fellow Warren County school Warrenton had impressive performances in the 12-team event.
Both schools were well represented in championship matches, with five Wright City wrestlers and three from Warrenton finishing in the top two of their respective divisions.
For Wright City, senior Sadie Sehnert, along with junior Lili Wiedemeier, won titles. In contrast, sophomore Kiera Carter, senior Kali Jensen and freshman Victoria Riggs all finished as runners-up.
Sehnert brought home the title for the Wildcats at 145. She defeated Osage’s Hannah See by fall at 4:38. The win is the 100th in the senior’s illustrious career.
At 140, Wiedemeier defeated Union’s Chloe Richardson, securing the fall at 5:17.
Carter finished second at 130, losing to St. Clair’s Lindsay Rampanl by fall at 2:36. At 125, Jensen finished second, dropping only an 8-3 decision to Palmyra’s Morgan Pillars. At 115, Riggs took second place, losing by fall at 1:18 to Liberty’s Kat Zenk in the title match.
Wright City coach said the tournament was a great start for his program.
“I thought the experienced girls wrestled well and our younger girls worked very hard and got some quality mat time,” Ross said. “First-year wrestlers Joshlyn Hawn (at 155) and Harper Martin (at 170) each picked up two varsity wins.”
Of the Warrenton trio to make title matches, seniors Allison Vacek and Dakota Lohrmann won their title matches, while senior Kylie Vance took second.
Vacek won at 170, defeating Union’s Alex Dierberg by fall at 42 seconds. Lohrmann won her title by a 6-0 decision over Union’s Kaitlyn Kuelker.
Vance dropped a 5-1 decision to Hannibal’s Lilionna Greenwood.
