The Wright City girls volleyball team is hitting its stride – and at the perfect time, too.
The Wildcats celebrated Senior Night by getting past Fort Zumwalt East 26-24, 25-27, 25-12, 25-16 on Thursday.
Wildcats Coach Gabby Vogt said emotions ran high for the team’s leaders.
“We celebrated Hailey (Billham), Marli (Burkhardt), Josephine (Grueneberg), Tiana (Sims), Jaiden (Walch), and Olivia (Wilson) and the impact they have made on our volleyball program! Emotions were high going into the game, but after playing Fort Zumwalt East this past weekend at the Warrenton Tournament, we knew a little of what to expect.”
Wright City (15-7) did beat East at the Warrenton Tournament over the weekend, but the emotions involved made things a little trickier this time around.
The first two sets were very close, with each side winning one, before Wright City took control.
“We had a slow start to the night, but we were able to turn things around and compete,” Vogt said. “I am super proud of the girls for continuing to have the drive and determination to get better. It was a special night for our team, and I am proud of how the girls kept fighting and competing.”
Walch led the team in kills with 16, while Grueneberg added seven. Grueneberg paced the team with 13 assists while junior Emerson Wendt pitched in 10. Burkhardt’s 29 digs led the team while Walch added 21 and junior Brooke Henson had 18. Billham also recorded six service aces.
WRIGHT CITY SOFTBALL 13, CLOPTON 4 – A massive final inning propelled the visiting Wildcats to a victory.
Holding the 5-3 lead entering the seventh inning, Wright City scored eight runs.

At the plate, Anna Klekamp and Emalee Swor each had two RBI for the Wildcats (9-13). Wright City will return to the diamond at 4:30 p.m. on Monday when the team hosts Hermann.
TOLTON SOCCER 4, WARRENTON 1 – A halftime tie was turned on its head.
Visiting Tolton tallied three second-half goals to earn the victory.
Warrenton’s tally came from Gavin Thompson, who was set up by Ian Young, but it wasn’t enough.

Warrenton (5-4) will host Missouri Military (4-4) at 6:30 p.m. next Tuesday before heading to Wright City for a Warren County battle at 6 p.m. on October 12.
