Wright City Travels to North Callaway
Posted
By Derrick Forsythe, Record Sports Editor
Where:North Callaway High School. When:Friday, Oct. 4.Time:7 p.m.Coaches:Wright City — Matt Brooks. North Callaway — Mike Emmons.Records:Wright City — 2-3. North Callaway — 1-4.Last Year’s Meeting:North Callaway 55, Wright City 21.In a dominant performance, North Callaway established a 48-0 lead by halftime, proving to be too physical for the Wildcats. Wright City managed 191 yards on the ground but didn’t find the end zone until the second half.Outlook:North Callaway has not been as successful this season, defeating only Tipton so far. They lost a 34-14 meeting with Montgomery County in Week Five. Brooks describes them as a big, physical team that will challenge Wright City up front. But the Thunderbirds offense has been fairly balanced this season, with the majority of their yards coming through the air. Brooks is expecting a flexbone look with a lot of power ISO, but North Callaway will also try to throw to the flats. Quarterback Cole Branson has completed 78 of 154 passes for 916 yards this season, tossing eight touchdowns and eight interceptions. Kyle Grejada is the leading rusher with 212 yards on 34 carries.Defensively, Brooks anticipates a 3-4 odd man front against a Wildcat offense that found considerable success in the second half against Bowling Green. The Wildcats even tossed two long touchdown passes to add that ‘dynamic’ to their offense.Wright City’s offensive weapons aren’t necessarily any secret, as it relies heavily on Steven Soltysiak for ground yards and has gotten some speed looks from Lamone Davis, who also helps out in the receiving game. Tyler Brittain’s big play potential has gradually been increasing throughout the season as he becomes more of a factor in the offense.Focal Points:Riding a two-game winning streak has Wright City on one of its biggest highs in recent history, as the program looks to string together more success. The schedule is opportunistic with a winnable Clopton game waiting next week. The Wildcats need to carry the momentum off a thrilling win at Bowling Green and take advantage of the schedule’s mercy the next couple weeks. The satisfaction of beating a once formidable Eastern Missouri Conference is maximum, but the Wildcats can’t settle on that as their primary achievement of the season.
Kyle Tuepker and the Wright City football team have won two consecutive after stunning Bowling Green last week.
