The points were fairly balanced for the Wright City track team during its Wildcat Invitational last Thursday. The girls placed fourth while the boys finished fifth out of 12 teams.Senior Brittany McPike catapulted the girls team with a solid performance in the throwing events. She achieved a personal best with a throw of 105 feet, 10 inches in the discus, beating all other competitors by at least 15 feet.McPike also medaled in the shot put with a third-place toss of 29 feet, 9 inches.“Brittany is throwing really well,” said Coach Sue Wright. “If she consistently stays above 100, she can reach that record.”The distance relays were equally strong, with each team placing fourth. The 1600-meter crew, consisting of Sam Benson, Jynna Fritz, Abbie Ogborn and Karlee Pelton, ran a 4:51.In the 3200-meter race the cast of Amber Schulte, Courtney Lawson, Erin Tomschin and Fritz clocked an 11:49.“Those girls really stepped up and earned us some good points,” said Wright.Fritz was also solid in the open 800, placing second with a 2:40. Meanwhile, Tomschin placed third in the two-mile run at 13:43.“She just has that running mentality,” said Wright. “She really prefers those long distances, and she’s just going to keep getting better and better.”The sprint relays didn’t finish as high, both coming in sixth. The 400-meter crew ran a 57.21, while the 800-meter team clocked a 2:01.The Wildcats also claimed additional points in the throwing events, with Holli Minzes placing third in the shot put at 28 feet, 7 inches.Amy Janowski tied for third place in the pole vault by clearing 6 feet, 6 inches. Finally, Benson took sixth in the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 6 inches. On the boys side, Ben Randolph was again a standout, earning multiple first-place medals. He won the 800-meter race with a time of 2:06.Randolph also helped the 3200-meter relay team, consisting of Jensen Elrod, Cody Klemp and Brenden Geier, to a first-place finish at 9:09.“Those guys really stepped up for us,” said Wright. “When Ben gets that baton, we don’t have to worry about what place we’re in.”Klemp also had a tremendous night in the distance events, finishing second in the two-mile with an 11:06. He placed fifth in the one mile run at 5:13.“The best part is that Cody is excited about running those events,” said Wright. “I tried to convince him just to run one or the other, but he wanted to do both.”Kody Morgan continued his success in the hurdles, surpassing his previous times with a third-place finish in both events. He ran a 17.01 in the 110-meter hurdles and clocked a 44.08-second finish in the 300-meter race.“He’s improved his time every race, which is awesome,” said Wright. “He keeps getting a personal best.”Nick Mueller also performed well, placing third in the 400-meter race at 55.9 seconds.Wright was also pleased with the 1600-meter relay team, which placed third despite an unusual lineup. The crew, consisting of Alvin Chenoweth, Richard Liddell, Mueller and Geier, clocked a 3:48.“That was really good, because it was kind of a crazy race with two of the normal guys out,” said Wright. In the field events, Christian Thompson placed fourth in the triple jump at 37 feet, 6 inches.STRONG FINISHERSDerrick Forsythe Photo.
