Wright City to face North Callaway in district opener Saturday

The Wright City boys basketball team was given the No. 4 seed in the Class 3, District 7 Tournament and will face No. 5 North Callaway Saturday at Winfield at 7:30 p.m.

The teams met for the first time Feb. 7, with the Thunderbirds coming away with a 76-42 victory.

But with Devon Holmes out because of a band function and Nick Boland on the bench due to disciplinary problems, the Wildcats weren’t at full strength.

“We played them short, so it was a little different game than hopefully we’ll play Saturday,” Wright City Head Coach David Evans said. “We got a good look at them and got to see what their players are capable of. They shot the ball really well against us, and if they shoot the ball that well, it would be tough for any team to beat them.”

Cameron Cole and David Liddell led the Wildcats against North Callaway, finishing with 12 points each.

J.J. McRoberts grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

“We give up some size, but if we can keep Nick out of foul trouble, I think that will help,” Evans said. “We’ve got to play a little tighter defense and defend the shooters better, but I think we can put a pretty good game plan together.”

Four North Callaway players scored double digits, led by Tully Thomsen’s 17.

Thomsen and Gabe Cash combined to shoot 16-of-13 from 3-point range.

The extra film of North Callaway should help Evans prepare his players, who will have less than a day to transition from regular season to postseason.

The Wildcats host Wellsville for senior night Friday before heading to Winfield Saturday night.

“It would be nice to have a day of practice in between those games, but Wellsville will play a similar style to North Callaway,” Evans said. “Hopefully Friday night can be a huge boost to us going into districts. And If we can get everybody on the court, and we’re shooting the ball well, we’re a pretty decent team.”

The winner of Saturday’s game will play No. 1 seed O’Fallon Christian or No. 8 Lutheran St. Charles Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

The championship game is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m.
