Wright City Switching to One Weekly Trash Pickup

Posted

Wright City residential trash pickups will go from twice to once-a-week except for large multifamily complexes. Also, all residents will now be charged for recycling whether they choose to participate or not under a new bid awarded to Wilson Waste last week, Under the new two-year trash collection contract to start march 1, the winning bid for single-family residential units or multifamily units with four units or less is $11.35 for the first year, and then increasing to $11.75 for the second year. For senior citizens living in single-family units or smaller multifamily complexes, the Wilson Waste bid included charges for $11.10 in the first year and increasing to $11.40 in the second year. In addition to Wilson Waste's rates, the city will charge an additional 33 cents to cover the city's processing expense. The monthly charge for multifamily units using dumpsters is $56 (one yard), $75 (two yards), $135 (four yards), $175 (six yards) and $215 (eight yards). Those rates will increase by $2 in the second year of the contract. Those properties will continue to have their trash picked up twice a week. Senior citizen multi-family units will be charged $64 per month for a two-yard container. Aldermen unanimously approved the bid, the lowest of four received by the city, at their Jan. 27 meeting. City officials preferred staying with Wilson Waste due to their solid reputation and past performance. Alderman also noted that residents had preferred one weekly pickup. "A lot of people don't want it two times," Alderman James Toothman said. Alderman Tom Black added: "(One is) all we need." As part of the approved bid, Wilson Waste will continue to provide containers to be picked up once a week at no charge at city hall, Ruge and Diekroger Parks, and the city maintenance shed. From May through September, the containers at the parks will be picked up three times per week. Also, the annual April spring cleanup will continue at no charge to the city. White goods will be picked up at anytime by Wilson Waste for a $30 charge. Wilson Waste can also supply a toter to residents for a $3 fee. Residents choosing to recycle will receive a free 64-gallon cart. City officials will have an option to renew the contract with Wilson Waste for a third year, with slightly higher rates. Currently, single-family residences are charged $10.13 for trash, while senior citizens pay $9.13. Multifamily units range from $56.14 to $216.30 depending on the size of the dumpster. Recycling is an extra $2.50 fee. Trash is currently picked up twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays with recycling items collected on Wednesdays. Keith Wilson, of Wilson Wastes, said his company has yet to determine what days trash and recycling items will be picked up. Bids were also received by Christian Environmental Services, On the Go, Inc., and Waste Management. Other options the four companies bided on included once a week pickup with a recycling bin at the city shed and twice a week collection with recycling. The approved bid doesn't affect commercial properties who will continue to contract trash collection on their own.
