A Wright City resident is suing the city for damage caused to her home when her basement flooded in May 2015.An attorney for Melissa J. Rhoades filed the lawsuit against Wright City on Dec. 26 in the Warren County Circuit Court.Among the lawsuit’s claims are that the city’s sewer pipes are too small to handle the water flow during heavy rainfall; that the city doesn’t have adequate barriers or storage to contain overflowing storm water; and that the city allowed dirt and plant matter to accumulate within the system, reducing its capacity. The city’s failure to address those issues after prior flooding “caused (Rhoades’) home and property to be invaded with and damaged by storm water that overflowed from the Wright City Sewer System,” according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit states the flooding caused damage to the home’s foundation, interior and personal property, and cost a great amount of time and money to clean up.Rhoades is seeking monetary damages against the city.“The city has reviewed the lawsuit and plans to vigorously defend itself against the claims,” said City Attorney Paul Rost. He declined to provide further comment. An attorney for Rhoades did not reply to a request for comment.Lawsuit
