Wright City Stuns Bowling Green
Posted
By Derrick Forsythe, Record Sports Editor
For several years, Bowling Green had its way against Wright City on the gridiron.Lately, the Wildcats have turned the tables, making a habit of shocking their Eastern Missouri Conference foe.The latest spectacle saw Wright City overcome a three-touchdown deficit to stun the Bobcats 35-28 in Week Five.“It was just a great team effort by the kids,” said Coach Matt Brooks. “Everybody played a role in the comeback.”After allowing Bowling Green to march down thefield at will in the first half, the Wildcats shut out the opposition during the final two quarters.“I can’t say enough about what the defense did in the second half, shutting them out,” said Brooks.Bowling Green went ahead early on a pass play and led 21-0 by the time Steven Soltysiak put the Wildcats on the board with a 68-yard run early in the second quarter.Still, Wright City had its chances with opportune field position. The Wildcats came up empty after recovering a fumble in Bowling Green territory and had a field goal attempt blocked. The Bobcats seemed to put the exclamation point on a potential rout moments before halftime, breaking loose for a deflating 90-yard touchdown run.“I felt like we didn’t play with the best composure in the first half,” said Brooks. “We took about 70 yards in penalties.”Despite trailing 28-7 at intermission, he was determined his team could battle its way back into contention.“I didn’t feel like we had been dominated like the score indicated,” said Brooks. “We talked about eliminating our mistakes.”With its starting running back sidelined with an injury after the first half, Bowling Green’s offense began to sputter. The Wildcats forced a three-and-out and began the early stages of their thrilling rally.Quarterback Kyle Lang hit Tyler Brittain on a 64-yard touchdown pass with 6:45 left in the third period, and the Wildcats immediately regained possession after forcing a fumble.Soltysiak pulled Wright City to within one touchdown on a 29-yard run.He then notched the game at 28-28 on a 46-yard scamper with 1:41 left in the third quarter.“We kind of reversed the field position battle in the second half, and were able to take advantage,” explained Brooks. The Wildcats took control on a 50-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Brittain with 5:20 left to play.Bowling Green’s final drive was upended when Tim Burks snagged an interception to secure the triumph for Wright City.“Of any conference win that we can pick to have, this one is pretty special,” said Brooks. “The kids always get excited about this game, and I’m proud of the way they fought their way back into it and finished strong.”
Wright City senior Steven Soltysiak scored three touchdowns during the Wildcats' 35-28 win over Bowling Green.
