It may have been senior night, but a freshman stole the show Tuesday night at Wright City.
Wildcat freshman guard Dillon Seabaugh helped lead the Wright City comeback in the second half against North Callaway, knocking down five 3-pointers in a 70-57 loss.
Seabaugh’s fourth 3-pointer of the night cut North Callaway’s lead to 45-38 with a minute left in the third quarter.
It would be as close as Wright City would get, however.
North Callaway extended its lead to nine heading into the fourth, and seven Wright City turnovers in the first four minutes of the quarter helped the Thunderbirds extend their advantage to 16 with five minutes left.
“We just didn’t do a very good job of guarding I thought. When you’re in a situation like that and down that much, you have to get consecutive stops back-to-back-to-back-to-back,” Wright City Head Coach Ken Brown said. “Sean (McDonald) ended up fouling out and he’s one of our better defenders. If he was in the game, I think things would have been a little different.”
Wright City had little initial trouble with North Callaway’s 2-2-1 full-court press, but the Wildcats struggled to score in half-court sets after settling down.
“Breaking a press has never been our issue,” Brown said. “We’ve been able to get through pressure a lot of times. I just think we just have to do a better job of settling down and running offense after we break the press, and not trying to play too fast.”
Niko Brown was the only other Wildcat to break the zone with a 3-pointer.
Brown hit three 3’s on the night and finished with 11 points.
Devon Holmes finished with 13, while Seabaugh led the team with 15 in his first varsity game.
“It was a good scheme for him with them playing a 2-3 zone,” Brown said of Seabaugh. “I know he’s a heck of a shooter, so I thought it would be a good game for him. Cameron Cole is out with the flu, so I brought him up and he did a good job with that tonight. He just has to get stronger and work on driving to the rim.”
The Wildcats host Clopton Friday at 8:30 p.m.
“I think we’ll be better next game,” Brown said, “but we have to get back on the practice court and get working.”
