Wright City Sophomore Emerges at State

Naïve to her own ability, Jynna Fritz coasted through the season unaware of her true potential.Week-by-week she surprised herself, collecting an Eastern Missouri Conference medal before finishing among the Top 10 at districts. But the Wright City sophomore still wasn’t sold. Not until Saturday, when she landed among the top quarter of 161 competitors in the Class 2 race at the MSHSAA Championships, did Fritz realize what she is indeed capable of.She crossed the finish line in 40th place — just 15 spots shy of All-State recognition.“I have the feeling I will end up placing in the next couple years, because I’ll be practicing all the time, because I actually know my potential now,” acknowledged Fritz. “I didn’t think I would actually place that well.”She ran a 21:46, appearing comfortable on the course despite it being her first appearance at Oak Hills Golf Club in Jefferson City.“I can’t say enough about her performance,” said Coach Sue Wright. “Ending up being 40th during her first year is outstanding. I think she realizes how good she can be.”But Fritz admits she battled anxiety in the moments leading up to the starting gunshot.“In the beginning I was extremely nervous,” said Fritz. “I felt like I was having a heart attack before the race started.”She put herself in favorable position early, soaking up the experience.“Once I started running, all the nerves went away, and I was just happy to be there,” said Fritz. The rigors of the course began to take their toll during the final mile, but Fritz overcame them mentally.“When I reached Fireman’s Hill, I was afraid I was going to fall back, because I kept having the urge to walk,” she recalled.Fritz regained her strength and surged up the finishing hill.“At the end of the race, I was extremely happy with my placement,” said Fritz.“Her career is just beginning, and she now knows what she needs to do return next year and earn a medal,” said Wright. “She’s way ahead of anybody we’ve had for a long time.”
