Wright City softball team to replace bulk of lineup in 2016

The Wright City softball team will need to replace five starters — including both middle infielders — as it looks to improve on last year’s 14-11 finish.

“With just two seniors, we’ve got everybody battling for positions, and that’s a good thing,” Head Coach Fred Ross said during Monday’s practice. “A lot of this group didn’t get a lot of at-bats last year.”

The Wildcats lost starting shortstop Savannah Bridges and starting pitcher Brook Vossen to graduation.

The duo hit over .400 in their careers and started a combined seven seasons for Ross.

Vossen started a team-high nine games last season while posting a 3.83 earned-run average.

“Those two are going to be hard to replace.” Ross said. “(Kristen) Reckamp was a four-year starter at second base, too, and defensively she was just outstanding.”

Starters Macy Evans, Jada Hunter, Remi Taylor and Madelyn Webb return this season.

Evans, a senior, was second on the team last season with a .493 average, and Ross expects her to play first base and pitch.

Taylor hit .403 last season as a freshman.

“Remi is an all-conference player coming back and Macy is an all-district player coming back, so we look for those two to lead the offense,” Ross said.

Webb and Hunter, a pair of juniors, round out the returning starters.

“Remi and Jada will probably be somewhere in the outfield, but other than that we’re still moving players around and figuring out the best positions for everybody.”

Junior catcher Leah Vossen appears to be the only player with a solidified position as of now.

The Wildcats head to the South Callaway jamboree Saturday and begin the season Aug. 23 at St. Clair.

“We’ll be OK,” Ross said. “Everybody is working hard, so we are happy.”
