Wright City softball Head Coach Fred Ross is hoping to finalize his lineup as the regular season hits its final stages this month.
The Wildcats hosted Mark Twain Tuesday for senior day, and finish the regular season in two weeks.
“We have a lot of players vying for positions right now, so we’re going to have to make some decisions soon,” Ross said. “We’ve been rotating kids in and we’re going to make some solid decisions in the next week and stick with a basic lineup. The same nine or 10 kids are eventually going to play, but right now everybody is getting their opportunity. Some players are seizing their opportunity and some are struggling with that, so we’ll see how that plays out in the next week and a half.”
Eight Wildcats are hitting at least .350 this season, led by Melissa Locke.
The sophomore is hitting .526 with a .571 on-base percentage this season to go along with four RBIs and a triple.
Seniors Abbey Jaspering (.406 average, 11 RBIs) and Leah Vossen (.357 average, 12 RBIs) have also led a Wright City (5-5) offense that has been up and down this season.
After scoring a combined 24 runs in consecutive wins over Community and Orchard Farm last week, the Wildcats were shut out, 8-0, at Silex last Thursday.
“I think we had 10 hits against Silex and didn’t get any runs, so that was disappointing,” Ross said. “We played really well against Orchard Farm right before that, but for some reason we laid a zero against Silex. We hit in bunches and we do silly things in bunches, so we’re focused on fixing that.”
The team traveled to Valley Park Thursday and host Bowling Green and Clopton next week.
“We play a good team in Valley Park on Thursday, and next week is probably our toughest week when we play Bowling Green and Clopton,” Ross said. “We expect those teams to be really, really good.”
Seniors Jada Hunter, Kailyn Gudermuth and Maddy Webb were honored alongside Jaspering and Vossen Tuesday afternoon.
Junior Lena Newcomb, who will graduate a year early, was also recognized.
“The seniors have done a pretty good job, and they’re going to be missed,” Ross said. “They’ve done a lot of things for the program and have set some records for us. Hopefully down the line they’ll start leading us to more victories late in the season.”
