After placing sixth at the Fort Zumwalt East Tournament on Sept. 20, the Wright City softball team walked out of the St. Peters school with one clear focus.
“We still have that one bad inning that hurts us and I think it’s some of a confidence factor,” Wright City coach Fred Ross said. “As a coach, you watch young players when something goes wrong and we drop the shoulders and our attitude changes a bit, so even if we make one mistake, we’re trying to keep our heads up.”
The Wildcats finished 1-2 in the tournament, beating St. Charles West 2-1 and losing to Lutheran St. Charles 6-2 and host-Fort Zumwalt East 6-1. They dropped to 6-8.
Ross was pleased with how his team competed, especially against bigger schools.
“We made the plays when we needed to and we played pretty well so I’m happy,” he said. “We competed in all three games, so that’s a good thing.”
While one tough inning has been a challenge, Ross said he's seeing signs of progress.
“Against St. Charles West, we moved on to the next play. We had a blunder, but we came back and got a double play,” Ross said.
Ross was especially happy with the team's efforts against the Warriors.
“We made some good plays in the outfield and made some good plays in our cutoffs,” Ross said. “Lorelai (Kellner) pitched very well, and her and Ava (Swaringen) have both been doing a really good job.”
Kellner struck out nine batters in seven innings, while Swaringen struck out four batters in 12 innings.
Ross also touted freshman catcher Harper Martin.
“She’s done an awesome job and she’s really taking control as a freshman. She’s a leader out there when she needs to be and she’s really stepped up,” Ross said.
At the plate, Wright City collected 21 hits in the tournament, with Swaringen leading the way with five hits. The Wildcats struck out just three times against Fort Zumwalt East, and both Kellner and Martin scored two runs each.
