The Wright City softball team returns five starters to its program this fall, following a 2019 season in which it claimed the Eastern Missouri Conference Championship. Like many programs, the Wildcats are experiencing a decrease in participation, with 17 players out for the team, down from the usual 20 to 25 players.
“This year with COVID may have kept some new kids away with practice starting almost three weeks before school starts,” said Coach Fred Ross. “It’s been an odd summer. I think that contributed a little bit.
“We want to compete in every game and as defending conference champs everybody going to be gunning for us.”
The Wildcats have the task of replacing all-state pitcher Melissa Locke, and will look to several hurlers to fill that role.
Madison Hamlett will play a large contributing role on the mound after gaining starting experience last year.
“She doesn’t throw the fastest, but she can throw strikes and our defense will help back her up,” said Ross.
Emma Thomas will promote after pitching on the junior varsity level last year, while Addison Fast could provide relief on the mound.
The Wildcats return catcher Tristen Head behind the plate.
Abby Vossen will handle responsibilities at third base, with Abby Raines playing in the outfield.
The Wildcats will also look to Allexus Donnelly and Hannah Kendall for contribution.
“We may end up moving some players around, but we should be pretty good defensively,” said Ross.
The Wildcats return three of their top hitters from last season in Kylie Brummerstadt, Head and Raines.
“We’ve got a lot of competition which is always good for our team,” said Ross. “If we’re playing like we’re capable, I think we’ll hit the ball pretty well against most pitchers.”
The Wildcats will open the season at the Boonville Tournament with a modified round robin format. They will also play in two larger school tournaments at Zumwalt North and Rolla. “Hopefully we’ll be able to compete for conference championship and be ready for districts,” said Ross.
