Wright City softball embraces new team dynamic

The Wright City softball team is gearing up for the 2025 season with a roster full of fresh talent, enthusiasm and a drive to compete.

“The camaraderie is really good. They all get along and they’re a very talkative group – it’s been so far, so good,” Wright City coach Fred Ross said.

The Wildcats lost six players to graduation, but return three varsity starters from last year’s team that finished 12-18.

The new team dynamic has led to a healthy dose of competition as players battle for spots on the field.

“Everybody’s battling for a position, so I like that,” Ross said. “They’re really competing well, so I’m looking forward to that and hopefully the best girl steps forward and if she doesn’t, then we got somebody else to fill in that hole.”

Ross said the team’s jamboree, which was played on Aug. 26, was used as a key opportunity to evaluate position placements.

This year’s squad features 16 players, which mostly consists of underclassmen. Two of the returning players – Sadie Sehnert and Lorelai Kellner – earned first team all-district honors in 2024.

“We are really young this year, but we have good senior leadership,” Ross said.

That senior class includes Sehnert, Aariah Robertson, Jolee Lockhart, Torrie Perry and Hailey Swor.

Robertson said she’s looking forward to her senior season with the Wildcats.

“I want to be able to show (the freshmen) what we’ve seen in past years, and from our prior seniors, and show them how softball should be done in high school,” Robertson said.

Over the summer, players committed themselves to open-field practices and weight room sessions, which Ross believes helped build momentum heading into the fall.

“Most of them have been here this summer doing something, so I’m happy about that,” Ross said.

Ross said his team is currently adjusting to its new turf field.

“Everything’s a little bit different on the turf field so we’ve had to change some things up,” he said.

Wright City will begin its season on Aug. 30 in the Lady Pirate Leadoff Classic in Boonville.

“I’m feeling very optimistic,” Ross said. “They’ve been doing a really nice job.”
