Heading into the final stretch, the Wright City softball team has turned around its season following a slow start to the season.
The Wildcats opened the year with four consecutive losses and only three wins in their first nine games. They have rebounded by winning four of their last five games, including a 7-5 victory over St. Charles in the consolation championship of the Fort Zumwalt North Tournament last Saturday.
Wright City entered this week with a 7-7 record. The Wildcats played Bowling Green on Tuesday and travel to Clopton Thursday. They are back home Tuesday against Van-Far.
Against St. Charles, Kaelyn Wegrzyn, Kylie Jarmuszkiewcz and Tristen Head each had two hits for the Wildcats, who led 4-3 after the second inning and added a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Abby Raines saved several runs by making two diving catches. Hannah Kendall pitched a complete game for the win.
Wright City advanced to the consolation championship with a 19-4 beating of Winfield in the second game. The Wildcats erupted for eight runs in the opening inning and tacked on seven more in the second. Jarmuszkiewcz went 2 for 3 and drove in three runs, while Wegrzyn also had two RBIs. Raines had two doubles. Madison Hamlett pitched all three innings for the win.
Wright City opened the tourney with a 3-2 loss to Fort Zumwalt East. The Wildcats led 2-1 headed into the final inning, but the Lions escaped by plating two runs. Raines drove in both runs for the Wildcats and Adison Fast had two hits.
Wright City began the week with a 9-8 triumph over Mark Twain. Tristen Head had a homer and a double, while Abbby Vossen went 3 for 4 at the plate. Hamlett earned the win on the mound and Kendall struck out the final two batters of the game for the save.
Two days later, the Wildcats defeated Sgt. Charles 14-2. Raines went 2 for 2 with two home runs and Russell added a double and two RBIs. Kendall recorded the pitching win.
Warrenton volleyball riding
9-game winning streak
The Warrenton volleyball team is starting to find its groove on the court and opponents should beware.
The Warriors (12-4) continued their winning ways last Tuesday with a three-set win over Winfield, after winning all four games to capture the championship at the Cuba Tournament Sept. 19. They have won nine straight.
They were scheduled to host the Megan Gross Invitational Saturday, but that was cancelled. They played at St. Charles West Tuesday night. They host Orchard Farm on Thursday.
Against Winfield, Morgan Frye had a team-high 16 kills, followed by Josey Schipper with 13. Allie Gerrard recorded 18 assists and Abby Hammerberg added 16. Warrenton won in straight sets (25-23, 25-21, 25-14).
Brothers team up for eight goals
The Dames brothers teamed up to score all of the goals for Liberty Christian as it improved to 4-2 on the season Friday.
Josh Dames had five goals in the win, while Zach Dames had the other three goals.
Liberty Christian sits at 6-1
Following their first loss of the season, the Eagles rebounded with a three-set win (25-19, 25-20, 25-19) over Westwood Friday. Liberty Christian, which is now 6-1 on the season, fell to club team STL Panthers last Tuesday in a three-set match (18-25, 15-25, 18-25). No other stats were available as of press time.
