Wright City’s Board of Aldermen has given final approval to an engineering firm for the city’s new 62-acre park, and set a May 2021 deadline to have plans for construction ready to go.
Aldermen voted 4-0 at their Nov. 14 public meeting to sign a service contract with Bax Engineering to draft a master plan and phase one construction drawings for a park at Westwoods Road and Wildcat Drive. Board members had indicated their support for Bax as the project engineer in October.
The estimated cost of services from Bax Engineering and a number of subcontractors is $233,000.
The newly approved contract sets an 18-month deadline for the final version of the plans to be submitted to the city. According to a timeline provided by the engineering firm, plans could be ready to send for construction bids as soon as February 2021, but could be delayed depending on state and federal permitting requirements.
The city and members of the public will have an early chance to review and comment on the engineering plans. The general shape of the park designs are scheduled to be submitted in August 2020.
Initial plans for the park will include at least one full-size baseball field and full-size soccer field, along with other fields of varying sizes, according to the engineering contract. The exact number will depend on topography surveys.
The first phase of development would also include a 2,500-feet extension of Wildcat Drive northward across the length of the park. It would intersect with another new road along the northern boundary of the park connecting neighborhoods to the east and west.
A pavilion, restrooms, lighting, parking and utilities would all be included in engineering for the initial phase of development. Plans also will include the water, sewer and electric utilities to serve the park.
Most of the early development will be limited to the southern area of the park. Future development, including playgrounds, more athletic fields, pavilions and walking trails, will be outlined in the master plan submitted by Bax Engineering.
Wright City purchased land for the park in 2018 for about $1.2 million. Money for the purchase and for future development came from the sale of the city’s water and sewer utilities for $10.5 million.
