Wright City R-II to offer expanded childcare services

Posted

In the 2024-25 school year, the Wright City R-II School District will offer childcare services to families in need on late start Mondays starting at 7:15 a.m. until the start of the official school day.

Originally, this service was only provided for students in kindergarten through fourth grade. The school board recently motioned to extend this service to fifth and sixth grade after a survey showed there was a need for it.

Before school child care will be available at Wright City East Elementary, Wright City West Elementary and Wright City Middle School.

Wright City Superintendent Christopher Berger, along with the school board, came to the conclusion that there was enough staff to extend this service to fifth and sixth graders. They also wanted to make sure families have this service on late start Mondays.

The survey indicated at least 160 students are expected to use the service in the two elementary schools along with at least 37 at the middle school.

Wright City East and West Elementary will have four staff members available during these days, the middle school will have two staff members.

Possible activities during these days at the elementary schools could include breakfast, library time and free play. At the middle school, child care may provide breakfast, homework help and physical activity.

To sign your child up for before-school childcare, newly enrolled students can sign up during registration. Current students can sign up while registering for classes. Parents may also call the school their child will be attending and inquire about receiving these services.

In addition, the 2024-25 school year will move from 171 student contact days to 169. Students will have two fewer days in the school year and 15 minutes will be added on late start Mondays after teachers expressed the need for more time dedicated to professional development and collaboration with other staff.

The district is well over the requirement of 1,044 hours that schools in Missouri need to reach during a school year, so the motion was approved by the school board.

The teachers will still be contracted for 180 days regardless of the motion.
