The Wright City R-II School Board voted unanimously to adopt a series of changes to its contract with MTI Greenhouse Solutions for the district greenhouse, located at the new high school.
Chief among the changes to the contract is the addition of a roll-up door, which will allow easier access to the facility. Under the original plans, the greenhouse access wasn’t on the same side of the building as the nearest access road.
District Assistant Superintendent of Operations Matt Abernathy said that the addition of the doors will improve the functionality of the structure, with the nearest access road being situated to the east of the greenhouse.
“We only have standard double doors on the north side of the greenhouse,” Abernathy said. “It does not create very easy access for patrons who want to come and visit the greenhouse area. There are a lot of benefits to having that door.”
The cost of materials and installation of the door will increase the bid by $7,384.58, bringing the overall cost of the construction project to $464,913.34. The increase was approved at the school board’s August meeting.
The breakdown of the increase includes the door, for $2,837.29, framing materials at $1,311.41, and the relocation of electrical materials for $1,717.44. The costs, coupled with labor, which increases the contract by $1,518.44, bring about the $7,384.58 figure.
“We felt like that would be needed for future use of any type of FFA sales, any type of greenhouse or plant sales that could possibly take place with our community, our patrons,” Abernathy said. “The best way for that to happen would be some type of open access to the east side of that drive. It would make it much easier, not only for sales, but to move product in and out.”
The greenhouse change isn’t the only construction going on in relation to the new high school.
Wright Construction is working to finalize a large water detention basin over the next few months, while the football and baseball scoreboards have been installed.
The board members said during the meeting that it should be a goal to have the district work with the company to provide updated project punch lists on the progress of all construction projects.
