The Wright City R-II Board of Education approved multiple change orders related to the ongoing high school construction project.
The board unanimously approved motions to approve five change orders totaling around $215,000. They tabled voting on a change order for installation of a booster pump until next month’s meeting.
The largest change order approved by the board was for soil stabilization at the football field. The change order carries a cost of $158,588.
Christopher said during the proof roll observation at the football field, it was determined by SCI that the entire football field area needs to be remediated. They plan to remediate to a 12 inch depth using 3.5 percent quicklime.
“Stabilization is always a tough thing,” Bobby Christopher of Wright Construction said. “It’s where this football field sits. It’s down at the bottom of a deep cut and on the other side of a creek … With that, the deeper we dug what we found were still these silty soils. It’s not necessarily the water that you’d like down there as the soil type.”
The additional stabilization is expected to add seven calendar days to the project.
The board also approved four additional change orders. They approved camera changes for $24,564, additional steel at the entrance canopies for $17,127, a water main and fire sprinkler change for $8,878 and MEP changes near the gym for about $6,151.
The board tabled action on a proposed change order for installation of a booster pump to allow those involved with the project to gather more information to bring back to the board. The proposed change order carries a cost of over $74,000.
“Right now, the water pressure on the site’s marginal,” Christopher said. “Right now, it’s borderline acceptable. But if there’s any further development on Roelker Road or if you add additions on to the property itself, if you expand it any time in the future, you’re going to need this pump because you’re not going to have the capacity and the volume of water that you want.”
Christopher noted as a whole, the project is carrying a change order rate of less than 1 percent. He said the industry standard is 5 to 10 percent and what he sees on projects is generally 3 to 5 percent collectively.
“I think you guys holistically are looking pretty good,” Christopher said.
