Wright City prepares for trash service changes

Posted

Wright City residents will need to keep track of several important dates this month to make sure their trash bills are paid and they aren’t stuck with extra trash bins after the city changes haulers this March.

February is the last month that Meridian Waste is scheduled to provide trash and recycling collection for Wright City residents. Grace Hauling is taking over starting March 1.

As part of that change, Meridian is taking back its trash and recycling bins — also called “totes” — ahead of Grace providing new ones. Residents need to leave their totes out on the correct dates to have them picked up by Meridian, city officials said.

The totes don’t have to be empty. Meridian is doing its final waste collection the same day it picks up totes.

These are the dates to leave out your totes for final pickup:

• Rigid (plastic and metal) recycling tote — Wednesday, Feb. 17

• Fiber (paper and cardboard) recycling tote — Wednesday, Feb. 24

• Trash tote — Friday, Feb. 26

All totes need to be placed at the curb by 6 a.m. on the appropriate day and left out until Meridian collects them, according to the city’s instructions. Anyone whose tote isn’t collected can call Meridian at 314-291-3131 to get it picked up.

New billing cycle

Grace Hauling will also take over direct billing for trash service, which was previously handled by the city.

To avoid confusion with that changeover, city officials last week mailed out early bills for the months of January and February. All bills for trash service through the end of February are due Feb. 26.

When Grace Hauling takes over billing, it will still bill on a three-month cycle, said Wright City Administrator Jim Schuchmann. However, Grace plans to charge customers right away in March as an upfront fee for its service, rather than waiting three months and then charging for the services it already provided, Schuchmann said.

He explained that charging upfront will allow Grace to avoid losing money by providing three months of services to customers who then refuse to pay — a problem the city office knows well.

“Unfortunately, at times we would have people use the service, and then want to just walk away and not pay us,” Schuchmann commented. “A lot of times we were trying to play catch-up (on bill payments) — like the old proverb of closing the gates after the horses have already got out.”
