Wright City Police Department commends quick response to construction site theft

Posted

In print this story incorrectly named the suspect as James Howes. The suspect in the theft is Joseph Howes, the Record regrets the error.

On the morning of Aug. 4, officers from the Wright City Police Department were dispatched to the Peruque Creek Manor development for a theft of tools from a construction site.

Several framing nailers, staple guns, powered saws, two generators, pneumatic tools, and a variety of batteries, chargers, and accompanying tools with a total value of approximately $5,000 were stolen.

With no small amount of aid from the construction company’s staff, officers Collin Haney and Todd Clark quickly began their investigation.

A vehicle was identified leaving the area at the time of the theft and was also noticed at the same time as a previously unreported  theft in July.

The vehicle was unique in appearance and the investigation identified Joseph Howes as the suspect.

This information was shared with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department. Shortly thereafter, the vehicle was located in the 300 block of South Carolina Avenue in Bellflower, and a Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputy was able to contact Howes and take him into custody.

A search warrant for the residence was obtained and a search of the home immediately ensued.

Many of the stolen items were recovered during the execution of the warrant totaling approximately  $4,600 of recovered stolen property, all within eight hours of the initial report. This was exceptional investigative work by these officers and the Wright City Police Department is grateful for the assistance of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department and Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office throughout this case.

The investigation will continue in an effort to recover the remaining stolen items.

Howes is currently being held at the Warren County Jail pending application of a warrant. As with all criminal investigations, he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

If anyone has any further information regarding this case, please contact Detective Sergeant James Holmes at 636 745-3541.
