The Wright City offense dusted off the cobwebs after a week off during Tuesday morning’s scrimmage against Warrenton.
Second-year starting quarterback Sean McDonald used the scrimmage to continue to build his rapport with wide receiver and fellow senior Devon Holmes, who caught multiple touchdown passes during the 7-on-7 competition.
“With all the camps we’ve done, that connection has worked a lot better,” McDonald said. “And now that he is more healthy than last season, I’m feeling more confident in his ability to make plays.”
Last season Holmes led the Wildcats with 29 catches, 393 yards and two touchdowns.
McDonald completed 83 of 200 pass attempts for 1,123 yards and four touchdowns, and he hopes to improve those numbers this fall.
“After the Missouri State camp I’m feeling a lot more confidence because we got to see that competition, and I feel like we have the freshmen and underclassmen more involved in the offense,” he said. “With all the camps I’ve been to, I definitely have more confidence in myself because of all the coaching I’ve received this offseason.”
Playing in the same offensive system should help McDonald, Holmes, and the rest of the Wright City offense, too.
“The offense is a little more advanced because they’re running the same system as they did last year, and that always helps,” first-year defensive coordinator Ken Brown said after Tuesday’s scrimmage.
McDonald agreed.
“A lot of the stuff stayed the same, and that helps,” he said. “Last season we were a little laid back, but I know this season we’re going full-force, full steam ahead.”
Along with McDonald and Holmes, other returning offensive starters include running backs Jaime Malta and Joe Phillips, who combined to rush for 814 yards and seven touchdowns last season.
The Wildcats begin their season at home against Winfield Aug. 18.
