Wright City Moving Forward with Big Boy's Property

Wright City officials are moving forward with razing the former Big Boy’s restaurant. At a special meeting held last Thursday, aldermen voted 4-0 to begin advertising to have two structures on the city-owned property demolished. They hope to award the demolition contract at the July 14 board meeting. The city paid $170,000 for the property, located at 13200 Veterans Memorial Parkway, and finalized the purchase in January to rid the city of a deteriorating building that many called an eyesore. The city envisions constructing a new city hall and police department facility on the property. Big Boy’s was closed by the Missouri Department of Revenue in April 2005 because the owners failed to pay state sales taxes. Since then, the building has sat vacant and the structure that housed Big Boy’s fell into disrepair. In the past month, the city has been busy selling most of the restaurant’s contents. Also at the June 16 meeting, aldermen approved the sale of some of the larger items that had been left at the former restaurant. According to figures tallied by Alderman Jim Toothman, the city will receive an additional $2,076 for those items. The city previously received $2,511.20 for smaller items sold June 4. Overall, 79 bids were submitted for the larger items and opened at the June 9 board of aldermen meeting. Aldermen postponed until having more time to review the submissions. Many of the bids, mostly for kitchen appliances, were submitted by the same individuals or businesses. Bids were not awarded for several items, such as a pay phone, pizza oven, coolers and shelves. City officials said they will either scrap the items, where they could possibly receive more value, or award bids at a later date.
