Leon L. Steward, 24, of St. Louis, was arrested Tuesday evening at around 6 p.m., authorities said. Authorities declined to reveal the location where Steward was taken into custody. He is being held in the Warren County Jail on a $500,000, cash-only bond. "He was picked up without incident yesterday evening (Tuesday) and brought into our jail," said Warren County Sheriff Kevin Harrison. "I'm glad to see this case has progressed so rapidly and the suspect is now in custody." Steward was the subject of an extensive manhunt throughout Monday and Tuesday by the St. Louis Major Case Squad, the Warren County Sheriff's Department and the Wright City Police Department. The manhunt extended into Illinois and as far west as Kansas City, authorities said. Steward is charged with the killing of Jonathan C. Reid, 22, of Wright City, at a residence in Wright City at around 4 p.m. Police said the apparent motive in the shooting was a dispute over a piece of property. Steward is charged with three felonies, including first degree murder, armed criminal action (assault), and armed criminal action. Reid was described as a resident of Wright City by police, although his last known address was in the 500 block of Summer Winds Lane in St Peters. The shootings occurred at a home in the 100 block of Elm Street in Wright City, occupied by Sharon Bush, 59. Bush was shot in the arm during the incident. She was treated and released at an area hospital Sunday evening. Bush is the grandmother of Reid's girlfriend, 20-year-old Krystal Hannah. Reid was flown to St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur, where he died Sunday night. Authorities said Reid had been shot in the chest, face and neck. The St. Louis Major Case Squad was called in on the case early Sunday evening. According to authorities, Steward and Reid had a confrontation on the front lawn of Bush's house at about 4 p.m. Sunday. The altercation carried on into the family room of the residence, where the shootings took place. "We believe the incident was non-drug related," said Lt. Tim Lowery, commander of the major case squad. Lowery said Reid was not a resident at Bush's home at the time of the incident. According to court records, Reid was ordered last March to pay child support of $313 per month to Hannah for their two children, ages 2 and 1. Steward also did not live at the residence, according to authorities. According to authorities, Steward has a history of drug charges. Steward was most recently convicted of possession of a controlled substance, marijuana, in 2007. He is currently on probation as a result of a guilty plea. Wright City Police Chief Henry Matthews said his department began the investigation of the incident late Sunday afternoon. He called in the Warren County Sheriff's Department a short time later. Matthews and Warren County Sheriff Kevin Harrison said they made the decision jointly to seek the assistance of the major case squad. "It was a matter of getting as many investigators involved in this case as quickly as we could," said Harrison. "The major case squad was able to put 18 officers on the case and the results we've gotten so far have been very gratifying." Harrison and Matthews both said they believed the rapid turnaround on identifying a suspect and issuing the warrant was the result of a combined effort among the three law enforcement agencies. "It's pretty good when you have a suspect and a warrant within 24 hours of the incident," Harrison said. The Wright City police chief said a homicide was very rare in Wright City. "This is our first one of the year," he said. "We generally don't get many of those in our city." Wright City has not had a homicide since 2005, authorities said. Matthews said there were a number of other people inside the house at the time of the shooting. But only Reid and Bush were shot. "We have had several past calls relating to that residence," Matthews said. "Instances like stealing, peace disturbances, that sort of thing."
