Wright City man charged with setting truck on fire

County prosecutors are charging a Wright City man with two felonies related to an incident last spring in which a truck was set on fire.

A warrant was issued this month for Adam T. Cress, 35, for first-degree property damage and knowingly burning another’s property, both of which are class E felonies. Cress is also charged with the misdemeanor offense of reckless burning.

The charges stem from an April 1 vehicle fire at the Liberty Gardens apartments in Wright City, according to a police document submitted to the court. Emergency responders were called to the apartments shortly before midnight and found a 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck with its cab completely in flames. Police reported that the truck was 3 feet from the vehicles next to it, one of which was significantly damaged by the heat.

Once firefighters extinguished the flames, police investigated the vehicle and found that a rag had been stuffed into the vehicle’s fuel intake. Further investigation led them to identify Cress as the last person in possession of the vehicle.

Officers who spoke with Cress allege that he admitted to setting the vehicle on fire after having an argument with family members. Cress allegedly admitted that he intended to set the vehicle on fire by igniting the fuel tank, but that didn’t work, so he instead ignited a blanket inside the cab and set the whole cab on fire.
