There will be a nice-sized contingent of Wright City track athletes headed to Centralia High School this weekend for the Class 3 Sectional 2 meet.
That’s because the Wildcats qualified eight individuals, five of those athletes in multiple events, and two relays for the next round after strong showings at the Class 3 Owensville district meet last Saturday.
Sophomore Kaveon Schulte was one of three individuals to qualify for sectionals in multiple events.
Schulte (15.83 seconds) finished second in the 110 hurdles and third (43.40) in the 300 hurdles. The results continue a strong run for Schulte, who, earlier last week, was named the Eastern Missouri Conference Hurdler of the Year.
“It’s an honor to be recognized for my hard work that I’ve put into the season,” Schulte said. “I would like to thank my coaches for giving me the opportunity to compete.”
Like Schulte, junior Kaden Cross – who was named the EMO Sprinter of the Year – will also continue to compete in both of his specialty events.
Cross (11.28 seconds) finished second in the 100 meters and fourth (23.48) in the 200.
“(The honor) just means that the work I am putting in is showing, but the job is not finished with this recognition,” Cross said. “I am not where I want to be, so I am ready to keep working (through the postseason).”
The 4x100 meter relay team of Stephan Hamel, Schulte, Dayton Humphreys and Cross (44.98) finished third. The 4x200 team of Hamel, Cross, Humphreys and Janyxan Tiscareno Sandoval (1 minute, 36.20 seconds) finished fourth.
Senior Quinn Schnarre will represent Wright City at the sectional meet. He finished fourth (124 feet-9 inches) in the discus and third (144-2) in the javelin.
On the girls’ side, junior Ada Ferrell was a double sectional qualifier, first in the 400 (1:02.90), where she was third in the 100 hurdles (16.21).
Along with Ferrell, freshman Victoria Riggs was third (2:32.47) in the 800 and also second (5:45.45) in the 1,600.
Senior Sadie Sehnert (112-7) finished second in the javelin.
Sophomore Joshlyn Hawn (97-2) was third in the discus. Senior Jolee Lockhart (31-0) was fourth in the triple jump.
Both the boys (65 points) and the girls (67.5 points) took home fifth place as a team at the event.
Now, it’s on to Centralia for sectionals and the chance to advance to the state meet in Jefferson City, Wright City Coach Fred Ross said.
“As a coaching staff, we all feel very proud of their accomplishments,” Ross said. “These young (men and women) work very hard at practice. Hopefully, they can continue progressing into the postseason meets and bring back some positive results.”
