With no students in the building over the next couple of weeks, Wright City R-II High School is undergoing renovations on both the inside and outside of the 50-year-old building. The first project completed earlier this month was restriping the asphalt parking lot.Presently, work is being completed on several interior rooms surrounding the gymnasium.“This is part of our five-year facility plan,” said Superintendent David Buck. “During the next year we’ll be creating a new five-year plan.”The locker rooms are being renovated with new restroom partitions and the addition of another stall. The floors also will be redone with an epoxy resin finish.“We wanted to update the existing facility and make it look more presentable for visitors,” said Director of Facilities Jack Sanford. In the coaches office, the bathroom and shower area is being renovated, while an official’s changing station and storage area are being added.“Last week they started the rebuilding process, laying down the block partitions for the restrooms in the boys locker room,” said Sanford. “This week they started with the carpenters hanging dry wall.”Sanford says the remainder of the coaches office will be used for meetings and film sessions.Last summer, the high school gymnasium court was replaced and is scheduled for an annual cleaning and reseal with wax near the end of July.“Once that’s done, that’s pretty much the extent of our summer,” said Sanford. He said the school is determined to finish the project before August, working within a tight window when athletic teams or staff aren’t using the facility. The high school is one of the two district schools not hosting summer school this year.In addition to the work at the high school, new handicapped doors were installed at Wright City East Elementary.Martin General Contractors is overseeing the project, having been awarded the $150,000 contract during the April 19 school board meeting. That figure does not include an additional $14,000 for the replacement of exterior soffits to the high school, which will be taking place in the next few weeks.Wright City
