The Wright City R-II School Board received updates from Wright Construction indicating that the athletic complex is nearing completion during their July 17 meeting.
The turf football/soccer field and baseball/softball field is nearing completion, with the installation of scoreboards remaining. This is projected to be finished by the end of this week.
Additional final site work includes completing the concrete swales of a large detention basin, expected by late August. This is contingent on the weather. Also, correcting a storm inlet with work beginning this week and completion anticipated before the school year starts on Aug. 18.
Wright Construction also mentioned they are starting to go through their site punch list. Additionally, their move-out date is before the start of the school year.
“We’re not quite done, but we’re really, really close to the finish line,” Bobby Christopher from Wright Construction said.
Questions continued to arise about the turf field, which will need either a cleaning or a replacement after dirt from the hillside trickled down onto the field during April and May from rainy conditions.
A final decision has not yet been made. District officials noted a decision will be made once they receive recommendations from independent turf specialists. From there, their civil engineer and architectural team will review the input and determine the best solution.
District officials added a decision has not been made yet because, “the civil engineer and architectural firm are both evaluating the situation to ensure that the cause for the infected turf area is remedied prior to cleaning or replacing the turf, to ensure that the situation does not occur again.”
Christopher assured the board that football and soccer could still be played on the field in the fall, stating the field itself is usable and the infected areas are around the inner perimeter of the track surface. The district backed up this statement saying it has no impact on athletic games.
“You can certainly use the turf as is,” Christopher said.
The district added they intend to use the fields in time for the beginning of fall sports on Aug. 11.
The board also received an update on the four-room classroom addition at East Elementary. Initially projected to be completed by Aug. 2, the timeline has shifted due to delayed materials.Specifically, the exterior brick was expected on July 1, but is now scheduled to arrive Aug. 4. The brick was delayed due to a postponement of production.
Despite this, teachers will be able to begin setting up classrooms as inspections have already taken place and the building will be in operation at the start of the school year.
Contractors will have nine days to complete the brickwork but aim to finish in seven. Final work on the inside of the building is expected to be completed by Aug. 5.
Hankins Construction assured the district there would be no distractions when the brick is installed if it happens past the first day of school.
