Record Managing EditorThe second time around was much easier for the Wright City cross country team.Running at the Pike County Fairgrounds for the second time in eight days, the Wildcats had six runners lower their times at Saturday’s Class 2, District 3 Meet in Bowling Green.For three runners, their times were good enough to earn a state berth.“We did an awesome job,” Wright City Head Coach Sue Wright said.The female duo of senior Jynna Fritz and junior Erin Tomschin will be returning to state and will be joined by freshman Tristin Riley who qualified in the boys race.Only the top 15 individuals and top two teams advance to state. The Class 2 girls race will be held at 9:40 a.m. Saturday at Oak Hills Golf Center in Jefferson City. The boys race will start at 10:50 a.m.Fritz wound up eighth at districts with a time of 21 minutes, 12.26 seconds. Her time was 33 seconds faster than the week before.Tomschin wasn’t too far behind. She placed 10th in 21:21.97.Fritz and Tomschin are returning to Jeff City for the third and second year in a row, respectively. Last year, Fritz placed 43rd in 21:57, while Tomschin was 103rd in 23:29.Riley, a freshman, had one of his better races of the season. He placed eighth in 18:25.80 and was only six seconds away from cracking the top five.His time was 25 seconds faster than the week before.Wright was pleased with the performance of her three state qualifiers.“Jynna and Erin ran great races and improved their times,” she said. “Tristin ran real well. Being a freshman he gained important experience. You cannot teach experience and for him going to state as a freshman will make him better in the future. Both Jynna and Erin can attest to that. They have been there before and know what to expect. It was a great job by these three athletes.”Junior Brice Reash narrowly missed a state berth. He wound up 16th in 18:59.68, just four seconds from making the top 15.Others running for the boys team were junior Jacob Mueller (20th, 19:19.69), senior Nicholas Mueller (24th, 19:26.44), sophomore Stephon Norwood (26th, 19:35.28), junior Tanner Riley (39th, 20:19.18) and senior Andrew McCracken (52nd, 21:33.45).Also running for the Wildcats in the girls race were senior Courtney Lawson (26th, 23:36.05), sophomore Zoe Pezold (35th, 25:29.60), sophomore Ashley Schulte (37th, 25:55.29) and sophomore Sierra Shaw (45th, 29:20.42).“I am so proud of these kids,” Wright said. “They worked extremely hard. And the exciting thing is that most of them are back for next year. We will always miss the seniors and this year’s seniors are great. They set the tone for all the younger ones by showing them by example hard work pays off.”In the team standings, the Wright City boys had 94 points and were fourth out of 11 schools. Bowling Green won the team crown with 49 points, followed by Father Tolton with 76. Centralia was third with 85 points.Centralia junior Nathan Sims won the race in 17:28.71, edging out Mark Twain sophomore Devin Neff, who placed second in 17:30.38.The Wildcats had 80 points to place third out of five teams in the standings. Bowling Green won the district title with 31 points, seven points ahead of runner-up Father Tolton.Rachel Selva, a junior at Father Tolton, had the fastest time and the fastest individual in 220:05.93.
