The Wright City girls golf team enters the new season with a plethora of experience.

With five golfers on the roster – four of which are returners – the foundation has already been created. Now, it’s about taking it to the next level.

“There’s not as much micromanaging with this group,” Wright City coach Stephen McClain said. “You can teach them the stuff and they’ll figure it out on their own with some help.”

Wright City returns Alexa Robertson, Emma Dietrich, Abby Schanuel and Morgan Nute. The Wildcats also have a newcomer with Charis Riggs.

Nute, a junior, is a two-time all-state medalist, placing fourth as a freshman and a third as a sophomore at the state tournament. She is already setting her sights on another trip to state this year.

Having spent the summer practicing nearly every day and competing in 10 tournaments, Nute is well prepared and driven to return to the state level.

“I just need to practice and focus on my mental game,” she said. “I need to make sure I’m staying in the moment on the course and not letting myself get distracted.”

McClain said his goal for Nute is to walk away with a state championship title.

“She is pretty much great at everything right now. She’s very locked in and taking the season very seriously,” McClain said. “She’s on the right path and is always working.”

McClain said Nute will lead a strong lineup that includes Schanuel and Robertson.

“(Abby) Schanuel has a far drive – she just needs to straighten it out a bit and Alexa (Robertson) is very routine in her swing,” McClain said. “She’s very mechanical and consistent.”

As the team prepares for the season, they have turned their focus to fine-tuning the short game – something McClain views as crucial for cutting strokes.

“We’re working on chipping a lot and I think that will help take the most strokes off their game,” McClain said.

Wright City is slated to begin the season on Aug. 29 at Boonville in the Boonville Par 3 Event. McClain said he’s excited to see how his team will do within the next two months.

“This is a team that can absorb a lot and take in a lot of information and apply it – they take direction very well,” McClain said. “I’m feeling pretty confident about this team.”
