Wind, rain and cold weather didn’t stop the Wright City girls track team from finishing third in Friday’s Orchard Farm Invitational. The Wildcats had three first-place finishes, including two sprint winners. The 400-meter relay team won its race in 52.6 seconds, less than two-tenths of a second off its season-best.“And that’s a great time with the weather we had,” Head Coach Sue Wright said Monday afternoon as she watched the relay team practice handoffs in the southeast corner of the Wright City track. The quartet of Emajahnai Hunter, Kia Campbell, Danielle Dyer and Mercedes Wray broke the school record two weeks ago at the Wright City Invitational, and Wright hopes the group can advance at next month’s district meet at Lutheran North. The Wildcats’ best time of the season (52.46) is the fourth-best time in Class 3, District 3.North Tech (50.85), Lutheran North (51.75) and Trinity Catholic (52.45) round out the top three.Orchard Farm is less than one-tenth of a second behind Wright City at 52.50.“Man,” she said while watching her team work and contemplating the postseason, “we go into St. Louis, and those kids are fast. But that happens sometimes.”Dyer and Campbell impressed Wright in their individual races, as well.Campbell set a personal best and finished third in the 100-meter in 13.1 seconds.Dyer won the 200 in 27.4 seconds.“I think we could get her into the 25s,” Wright said. “She’s strong enough to do that.”Erin Tomschin was just off her personal best in the 1,600-meter, winning the race in 5 minutes, 45.7 seconds.Tomschin has run in the 400-, 800-, 1,600-relay and 3,200-relay this season, which has put her coach in a predicament. “My dilemma right now is figuring out what she’s going to compete in,” Wright said. “I have to look to see what events she has the best chance to qualify in. That’s what you’re looking at right now as a coach. You’re asking yourself, ‘What positions are we at and where do we have the best opportunities to qualify for the next level?’ And that’s tough, especially with the group of kids we have this year.”Tomschin is currently first in the district in the 1,600 and second in the 800.The 1,600-relay and 3,200-relay teams are currently third.“As I look into the district and sectional, we’re borderline right now,” Wright said. “We have a lot of thirds and fourths right now, but thirds and fourths can easily be fifths and sixths.”The top four finishers from each event advance to the following week’s sectional.“They know what they need to do,” Wright said, “and they’re working hard.”The Wildcats head to the Eastern Missouri Conference Meet Tuesday at North Callaway. The host school and Montgomery County appear to be the favorites.“Our conference is really tough, and I’m really glad that we’re competing so many times against our conference schools. I used to not like that because we saw the same schools, but it’s good because you can see where we’re at,” Wright said. “We’ll be up there, hopefully in the top three. We have a strong conference this year, but now is where you work hard to get those times down and distances up.”.SMOOTH HANDOFF — Kia Campbell, left, hands the baton to Danielle Dyer during the 400-meter relay at St. Dominic.
