A mix of young and old gave Wildcat fans a reason to be excited at Thursday’s Wright City Warm-Up meet.
Senior Erin Tomschin continued her prowess on the track with a win in the 1,600 meters.
She finished in 5 minutes, 55.3 seconds, 12 seconds ahead of O’Fallon Christian’s Emily Hanrahan.
Tomschin qualified for the Class 3 state meet last year in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races, and expects to focus on her individual races this spring instead of helping in distance relays.
Head Coach Sue Wright will instead focus on sprint and middle-distance relays, where the Wildcats have impressed of late.
The group of Kia Campbell, Danielle Dyer, Emajahnai Hunter and Mercedes Wray finished second in the 400-meter relay with a time of 55.7 seconds.
“The girls sprint relays are going to be good,” Wright said. “We don’t lose much by adding Mercedes Wray to our 4X1 and 4X2 relays. I’m not focusing too much on the girls distance relays because Erin is going to run her individual races. So we’ll rely on the younger kids in those relays.”
Wray, a freshman, also finished third in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.2 seconds.
“She’s done really well in the hurdles as a freshman,” Wright said. “And she could probably run the 100, but they’re back to back.”
In the field events, a pair of freshmen left Wright smiling.
“Emily Gonzalez-Sanchez jumped 14-something (14-3) her first long jump, and Ashley Lawson jumped 13-10,” Wright said. “I haven’t had consistent jumps that big for a long time, and they’re freshmen. The future is bright.”
