The Wright City track coaches were pleased with the seventh-place finish by the Wildcat girls at Friday’s Crusader Invitational at St. Dominic.
Wright City finished with 54 points overall.
Francis Howell North won the meet with 145 points.
“Those were big schools we competed against,” Wright City Coach Sue Wright said. “But we did really well.”
The Wildcats were led by the 400-meter relay team of Kia Campbell, Danielle Dyer, Emajahnai Hunter and Amy Janowsky, which finished third in 53.8 seconds.
The quartet was one of three Wright City relay teams to improve its time from the previous meet.
Wright said she is still tinkering with relay teams, looking to find the best four runners for each event before finding the best order for each race.
“We’re moving people around a lot, so it’s cool to see we’re still doing as well as we are,” she said. “We’re getting better times, and that’s what we want.”
Erin Tomschin finished fourth in the 1600 with a time of 5 minutes, 58.69 seconds.
“Erin really had a strong finish,” Wright said. “That was good to see.”
Jynna Fritz finished the race in 6:02.22, good enough for a sixth-place finish.
Dyer, who is battling a nagging hip injury, finished fourth in the 100.
“Danielle and Erin do a great job no matter where I put them,” Wright said. “And Danielle’s times are only going to drop as she gets healthy.”
Sophomore Nina Noltkamper picked up six points for the Wildcats with a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 100 and 300 hurdles, finishing in 19.41 seconds and 58.15 seconds, respectively.
In the long jump, Campbell finished fourth overall with a final distance of 13 feet, 7 inches.
“We’re really young in the jumping events,” Wright City Coach Fred Ross said. “But they did a really good job.”
Savannah Bridges posted a personal best of 69-7 in the discus to finish ninth overall.
The Wildcats host the annual Wright City Invitational Thursday afternoon, and Wright hopes the progress continues.
“The best part about this team so far is that we have a group of kids that work hard and don’t complain,” she said. “We are continuing to get better, and that’s what I like to see.”
