Wright City girls open with two losses; Other sports from this week

Jasmin Simpson had a game-high 19 points, but it was not enough as the Wright City girls basketball team fell in its season opener Friday.

Emily Schanuel also reached double figures with 10 points in the 54-43 loss to Winfield. The Wildcats also received six points from Abby Raines. 

Josie Bauer and Kadence Berry had 13 and 12 points, respectively, to lead Winfield.

Wright City opened the Orchard Farm Tournament on Monday with a 34-30 loss to Duchesne. The Pioneers broke a 13-13 tie with a 19-6 run in the third quarter and held on as the Wildcats outscored them 11-2 in the final eight minutes.

Meyer’s long-range shooting lifts Liberty Christian

Liberty Christian sophomore Anna Meyer drained three treys and scored a team-best 19 points in a 52-42 road win at Hayti on Saturday. 

Meyer made eight of 11 shots from the field, including 3 of 6 from long range, as the Eagles jumped ahead 30-15 at halftime. When Hayti closed the gap to six in the third quarter, Liberty Christian responded with a 14-10 final quarter. 

Adison Roden also reached double digits with 12 points and Sophie Mueller contributed eight. Roden led the team in rebounding with 14 boards and Gracie Foran had 11 rebounds. 

The Eagles improved to 9-3 on the season. 

Earlier in the week, Liberty Christian won 60-26 over the St. Louis Knights last Tuesday. Roden had a game-high 26 points and Alli Meyer followed with 10. Roden pulled down 12 boards.

The Eagles jumped ahead 22-3 in the opening quarter and cruised the rest of the way.

Wrestling

Wright City wins two of three matches at MMA quadrangular

The Wright City wrestling team won two of three matches at a quadrangular hosted by Missouri Military Academy on Dec. 8.

The Wildcats won 24-21 over Falton Tolton and 30-12 over South Callaway and fell 51-24 to MMA.

In the Father Tolton match, Landon Scott, Kaylob Stufflebean, Kyle Horneker and DeShon Johnson all recorded wins.

In the South Callaway match, David Riggs, Scott, Stufflebean, Horneker and Johnson won.

Scott, Stufflebean and Johnson had Wright City’s lone wins in the MMA match.

Warrenton competes at Farmington duals

The Warrenton wrestling team competed at Saturday’s Farmington Duals with Anthony Lombardo winning three of his four matches during the day. 

The Warriors fell in all four of the duals, losing to Carthage (66-3), Farmington (66-3), Hannibal 64-12) and Pacific (53-0).

Levi Penroad also recorded one win for Warrenton.

Boys Basketball

Wright City on 4-game skid

Entering this week’s slate of games, the Wright City boys basketball team is in need of a victory. 

The Wildcats are currently riding a four-game losing streak after a season-opening win. They fell 45-33 at New Haven on Dec. 11, two nights after a 55-36 setback to St. Clair. 

Wright CIty’s skid started with a 45-38 loss to Missouri Military Academy on Dec. 2 and a 52-21 loss to Hermann on Dec. 7. Hayden Beck had a game-high 14 points in the loss to Hermann.
