CLARKSVILLE - Their second half was solid but the Lady Wildcats couldn’t shake off a slow start Monday, losing 56-44 to Mark Twain in the opening round of the 24th Annual Clopton Invitational.
The ‘Cats fell behind 22-7 after the first quarter. They struggled with turnovers and stopping Mark Twain junior Emma Ross, who recorded her first career triple-double.
Ross had 12 of her game-high 20 points in the opening period and finished with 10 rebounds and 10 assists. She shot 9-of-20 from the floor and also added four steals and two blocks.
Wright City was stuck in a 25-point hole at 40-15 by intermission, but things got better in the next two quarters.
Senior guard Kelsey Capstick, who knocked down three treys in the contest, got the Wright City offense going with seven of her team-best 14 points in the third.
The Wildcats outscored the Tigers 13-8 in that period and 16-8 in the fourth. They trimmed their deficit to 11 on two occasions in the second half but never managed single digits.
Freshman forward Jasmin Black was 5-for-8 from the free throw line and ended with 11 points for the Wildcats. Junior Abby Raines chipped in with nine points. Senior Kaitlyn Johnson had six and junior Emily Schanuel added four.
After Ross’ 20-point performance, sophomore Autumn Arndt had 12 points and Elizabeth Trower and Anna Echternacht scored eight apiece for Mark Twain, which improved to 4-6 overall.
Monday’s setback was the fifth consecutive loss for the Wildcats, who are 2-5 overall. They move into the consolation bracket of the tournament and played Louisiana on Wednesday after Record Deadline with the winner advancing to the consy title game on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Louisiana lost 65-9 against top seed Monroe City in its first round matchup. The Bulldogs were held scoreless in the first quarter and trailed 49-2 at halftime.
No. 2 Clopton beat No. 7 Winfield 62-19 and No. 6 Silex beat No. 3 Elsberry 49-37 in the other opening round games.
Host Clopton is the reigning tournament champion and has won the title six of the last seven years.
