Simply put, Coach Fred Ross says his Wright City girls basketball team was outmatched. The Wildcats lost 61-18 to the host team in the Class 3 District 6 Tournament at Duchesne on Saturday.A young team that finished 1-23 had just two players returning, seniors Kyle Winfrey and Orlanda Hill, who had ever seen action in a postseason game.“We came out scared and timid and didn’t play very well,” said Ross. “It was the first big game for most of these girls.”As Ross had expected, Duchesne went to work pressing, forcing the Wildcats into turnovers to build a 22-4 lead after one quarter.“We knew they would probably pressure us, and we didn’t handle it well,” said Ross.By halftime, the Pioneers were in command 39-7.“We were just standing a lot of the time,” said Ross. “They played at a different speed than we were.”Wright City especially struggled inside against the post presence of Natalie Schroeder and Katie Sportsman, who scored 18 and 16 points, respectively.“Their two big girls lit us up,” said Ross. “We didn’t have an answer for them.”Ahead 57-13 after three quarters, both teams turned the game over to their reserves.“We got the younger girls in there and gave them a chance to improve, with them being the future of the program,” said Ross.Recognizing that advancing would be a near insurmountable challenge, Ross says his team talked about its progress throughout the season.“We talked about our ability to work hard and get better in the offseason,” said Ross.Hill finished with five points, while junior Savannah Bridges netted four.WILDCATS LOSE IN FIRST ROUNDDerrick Forsythe photo.
