Wright City girls capture team title at John Burroughs

The Wright City boys and girls wrestling squads have had a successful start to the beginning of their season after hosting the Wildcat Triangular on Dec. 5 and participating in the John Burroughs Tournament on Dec. 6-7.

In the John Burroughs Tournament, the girls team took home first place for the second year in a row, beating out nine schools. The boys team finished seventh out of 11 schools, which is their highest team finish in four years. 

All seven Wildcat wrestlers on the girls team placed in the top three of their weight classes. Competing in the 125-pound class, Rebekah Riggs placed first after winning five rounds. Sadie Sehnert and Caelyn Hanff were the champions of the 135-pound class and 190-pound class after winning five matches. 

Competing in the 120-pound class, Kali Jensen placed second. Jensen won four matches and lost one. Lilliana Wiedemeier and Jolee Lockhart placed second in the 130-pound class and 140-pound class. In addition, Lauren Ritter took home a third-place finish in the 155-pound class. 

Joseph Beitel took home a first-place finish after winning all seven of his rounds in the 132-pound class. Competing in the 144-pound class, Lane Graves also won all seven of his matches and placed first out of nine wrestlers. Quincy Rice had a first-place finish in the 215-pound class and won all seven rounds. 

In addition, Ayden Dile placed third overall out of seven wrestlers in the 285-pound class, while Hank Jennings placed fifth in the 157-pound class. Hunter Shoults and Bentley Teubner placed seventh in the 150-pound class and 190-pound class, respectively. 

In the home match, Wright City’s Graves defeated Missouri Military Academy’s Michael Pfeifer by fall in the 144-pound weight class. Graves went on to win two more matches by forfeit. 

In the 175-pound class, Gavin McCord defeated MMA’s Blake Krull, fell to South Callaway’s Ethan Munford and won another match by forfeit. Teubner also won two matches against Winfield’s Brayson Sambo and MMA’s James Jackson and lost one to South Callaway’s DongKyu Kin in the 190-pound class. 

Wright City’s Beitel, Jennings, Dile and Ryder Collins also won two of their three matches. 

On the girls team, Sehnert defeated South Callaway’s Caroline Young by fall in the 135-pound class and won her other match by forfeit. Wiedemeier won over Winfield’s Lindsey Bray by fall in the 130-pound class and won her other match by forfeit. 

Wright City’s Lockhart won by default and lost one match by fall to Winfield’s Jozee Kerkemeyer in the third period. Riggs eventually fell to WInfield’s Emma Jenkins in the 125-pound class in a second-period pinfall. Riggs won her other match by forfeit. 

Ritter and Hanff won both of their matches by forfeit. The girls team placed first overall over Winfield and South Callaway. 

The Wright City girls team will compete next in the Liberty Invitational on Dec. 13, while the boys will compete in the St. Charles Tournament on Jan. 17 and Jan. 18.
