Wright City girls basketball team struggles with consistency

The Wright City girls basketball team battled consistency and injury problems en route to a 2-22 record this season.

The Wildcats started the year 2-3 but lost 19 straight, capped off with a 57-16 loss to Duchesne in the first round of the Class 3, District 6 opening round.

“We did about what I expected,” Head Coach Fred Ross said. “I expected a few more wins, but we were competitive in about half of our games. I saw a few bright spots, even in a couple of the losses.”

Wright City was led in scoring by senior guard Savannah Bridges, who finished with 7.3 points per game.

Sophomore forwards Abbey Jaspering and Alyssa Hart and junior guard Amy Janowski averaged between four and five points, but Ross couldn’t find another player to complement Bridges on a regular basis.

“The consistency was always the hardest thing with all the younger players,” he said.

The Wildcats played seven underclassmen in most games, with Bridges being the only senior on the roster.

Freshman guard Riley Heiliger impressed Ross after joining the varsity level late in the season.

Heiliger played in seven games and averaged 2.6 points.

“Riley stepping up was nice to see,” he said. “I wasn’t sure if she’d be more than a really good J.V. player this year, but she really improved over the summer.”

Ross hopes his two juniors, Amy Janowski and Jada Hunter, continue to improve over the summer, as well.

The duo combined to average 7.2 points this season.

“Amy started getting her shot down later in the year and I think that will bode well for us next year,” Ross said. “They were both good leaders, and they got better over the summer, just like Riley.”

Ross said the growing pains his team went through this season were expected because of the lack of varsity experience.

“But next year I’ll have seven players with that experience, instead of three,” he said. “And that will be huge.”

The Wildcats are expected to participate in a few summer camps and tournaments, and Ross said those, along with individual time spent in the gym, will determine how much Wright City improves next season.

“They will have another summer to get better, which is important once you play varsity and figure out what the speed is like and the strength you need to compete,” he said. “Hopefully, that will make them work harder this summer.”
