Try as it might, the Wright City football team just couldn’t keep up on Friday.
Playing at Eastern Missouri Conference foe Bowling Green, the Wildcats (0-3) fell 54-18 to the Bobcats.
After each of Bowling Green’s first three scores, the Wildcats had an answer.
First, Kaveon Schulte’s 70-yard touchdown run with 1 minute, 14 seconds left in the first quarter cut the host’s lead to 7-6 after a missed two-point conversion.
Next, after Bowling Green (2-1) added another score, TJ Hamel caught a pass from Kayden McCurdy of 35 yards but, after the conversion failed again, Wright City trailed 14-12.
After another Bobcats’ score and a change of possession, the Wright City defense got to work.
With 3:29 left in the half, McCurdy struck again as his interception turned into a pick-six as he returned the ball for a score to make it 21-18 after a missed extra point attempt.
From that point, it was all Bowling Green, though.
A score before the half made it 28-18 for the Bobcats as the teams headed to the locker room, and Bowling Green then scored 26 unanswered second-half points to cruise to the victory.
Wright City will return to the field next Friday as the team heads to EMO rival Louisiana (3-0).
Last season, the Wildcats beat Louisiana 27-14 at home to account for the team’s third straight win over the Bulldogs.
