Wright City volleyball Head Coach Amy Geurin knew Monday’s Class 3, District 7 opener against Lutheran St. Charles would be tough.
The Cougars were the No. 3 seed in a loaded bracket, and the Wildcats needed an upset to reach Tuesday’s semifinals.
“We definitely battled in the first set,” Geurin said after her team’s two-set loss. “They knew their season was on the line, and they came out strong and they came out fighting, and that’s all I can ask.”
The teams battled back and forth in the first set, and Geurin called a timeout with her team down 20-17.
The Cougars responded with a 5-3 run to win the set, 25-20.
After the short break, Lutheran came out on fire and took a quick 7-1 lead.
They eventually took the second set, 25-13.
“I think it’s just hard to keep the energy going after you battle so hard in the first set and you still don’t win,” Geurin said. “But we had spurts in the second set, which is what I ask.”
The Cougars improved to 19-7-2 on the year and advanced to play St. Francis Borgia Tuesday night.
“They’re pretty good, they’re just solid,” Geurin said. “They’re scrappy, they kept the ball alive and they placed the ball on our side.”
Lizzie Lopez led the Wildcats with three kills, while adding one attack and one dig.
DeAsha Briner had a team-high 14 attacks, and Abi Murri added 11.
Murri also led the team with nine digs.
Holmes finished with one ace and two digs.
“Donavan had a great game serving, Abi had a great game in the back row and Lizzie had a great game in the front row,” Geurin said.
The Wildcats finished the season 11-13.
“We had our ups and downs and battled with a bunch of schools we weren’t supposed to compete with, and that’s all we ask,” Geurin said. “We want to compete in those games, and they had great attitudes while they did it.”
The second-year head coach said there will be plenty of things to work on during the offseason.
“We want to work on blocking skills, because that’s a presence we don’t have right now, and we need to change that,” she added. “We’re really going to work on Reagan’s setting form, too, because she’s just a freshman and that’s exciting for us.”
