Wright City enjoys personal bests heading into districts

The theme was clear for the Wright City track team during last Thursday’s Eastern Missouri Conference meet at Montgomery County. The majority of its competitors recorded personal bests, and Coach Sue Wright is hopeful the Wildcats will continue that progress this Saturday during the Class 3 District 3 meet at Lutheran North.“The best part about it was all the personal bests the kids celebrated,” said Wright. “It was a tremendous showing for us.”She believes Wright City’s best chances of advancing in the postseason will be in the distance events, particularly with Jynna Fritz. The junior set a new school record in the 800-meter race, clocking a 2:28.94 to eclipse a mark that had stood since 1980. She also ran a 5:43 in the mile to finish third.“She did an outstanding job, and it’s great to see her being rewarded for all of her hard work,” said Wright.Freshman Danielle Dyer also had a standout day, winning the 200-meter race in 27.61 seconds.Wright says she will likely opt to keep Dyer out of the 100-meter race at districts in order to preserve her for the sprint relays. Those relay teams also recorded personal bests at the EMO meet. The 400-meter relay, consisting of Karlee Pelton, Janee Hill, Abbi Ogborn and Dyer, finished second in 54.78 seconds. The 800-meter relay placed second with Sam Benson, Kia Campbell, Ogborn and Dyer running a 1:58.Amy Janowski recorded a personal best in the pole vault, clearing 7 feet to finish second.Freshman Adrianna Jefferson continued to emerge as a threat in the discus, placing fourth with a personal best heave of 93 feet, 8 inches.Meanwhile, Janee Hill jumped a personal best 14 feet, 8 inches in the triple jump.In the boys events, the 1600-meter relay team, including Luke Bruning, Nick Mueller, Austin Buchheit and Ty Davis, finished first by running a personal-best 3:42.Mueller had a strong day individually as well, placing third in the 400-meter race at 55.7 seconds and fourth in the mile at 4:55, also a personal best.Jake Mueller finished fourth in the two-mile race at 11:51.Bruning was strong individually as well, finishing fifth in the 800-meter race at 2:18 and third in the mile at 4:52.WILDCATS ENJOY PERSONAL BESTSDerrick Forsythe photo.
