Wright City ends regular season on sour note

By Tim SchmidtRecord Managing EditorIf two late leads hadn’t slipped away from the Wright City softball team, Saturday’s Eastern Missouri Conference Tournament showing might have been much different.Instead, two losses in three games have the Wildcats needing to regroup quickly with the postseason now here.Wright City (13-10) will be hosting the Class 2, District 4 Tournament this week, with the fourth-seeded Wildcats opening against No. 5 Trinity on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.“I think we will be OK if we field the ball,” Head Coach Fred Ross said. “I think we will hit. My top three, four hitters are hitting the ball pretty well.”Several errors were costly for Wright City in Saturday’s EMO tourney. In both losses — 9-7 to Clopton and 5-4 to Van-Far — the Wildcats had four errors that led to late leads disappearing. In the opener, Wright City plated three runs in the top of the fourth inning to regain a 7-6 lead. However, a botched double play and consecutive hits in the bottom half of the inning allowed Clopton to rally with three runs.Macy Evans suffered the loss. Six of the nine runs scored were earned. Offensively, Madelyn Webb had two hits, both doubles, and two RBIs. Savannah Bridges contributed two hits, while Remi Taylor scored twice. In the consolation championship later in the day, Van-Far took advantage of errors in the final inning to plate two runs and sneak out with a 5-4 win over the Wildcats.Taylor had two of Wright City’s five hits. She also scored a run. Macy Evans, Kristen Reckamp and Brooke Vossen also had hits in the loss. Only two of the five runs scored against Webb were earned. She allowed eight hits, while striking out four and walking one. While their gloves failed them at times, the offense also had trouble throughout the tournament. Ross noted his squad only laid down one successful bunt in 12 attempts.“That is something we practice every day,” Ross said. “We have to execute that when it comes to districts.”Bridges went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and one run scored in the Wildcats’ lone victory in the tourney, a 5-1 triumph over Community R-6. Wright City jumped ahead with two runs in the second and added three more in the fourth.Vossen allowed just three hits in the complete-game win. She struck out three and walked one. She also helped herself with two hits.Heading into the postseason, Ross said his senior class is looking to win their first district game. A first-round win would advance the Wildcats to the semifinals where top seed Bowling Green awaits. In the lone meeting earlier this season, the Bobcats won 8-0“It was a lot closer game if we had made some plays,” Ross said. “We have to worry about the first game and then worry about Bowling Green.”
